Q:

Are the gifts of the Spirit valid for today?

A:

We believe that it is possible for Christians today to receive special gifts of the Spirit. In regard to the spiritual gifts as they are listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, it is important to note especially verse 11 where we find that the Holy Spirit gives the gifts according to His own will.

In Mr. Graham’s book “The Holy Spirit,” he states as follows: “He (the Holy Spirit) chooses who gets which gifts, and He dispenses them at His good pleasure. While we are held accountable for the use of any gifts He gives us, we have no responsibility for gifts we have not been given.”

Mr. Graham goes on to say: “Every one of the fruits of the Spirit [Galatians 5:22-23] should be characteristic of every single Christian. But the gifts of the Spirit are different. Every believer should have the same fruit as every other believer, but not every believer will have the same gifts as every other believer. No, the Holy Spirit distributes the gifts in such a way that every believer has at least one gift which is uniquely his. You may have been given a certain gift by God, but it would be a mistake for you to say everyone else should have that same gift.”

We must keep in mind that the spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit and must not be considered unimportant. The use of them is to exalt the Lord and build up the body of believers. The possession of a spiritual gift is not to be thought of as making one believer more holy or more spiritually advanced than another.

It is important to note that Paul admonishes that these gifts must be governed by love and that all things should “be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40). A good test of any spiritual ministry or experience is whether or not it honors God and exalts the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you. This is a very thoughtful and well presented explanation on the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

  2. Francis Atkinson says:

This teaching on the spiritual gifts is exactly as I believe.

Can you briefly explain to me the gift of discernment? I believe I have been given it but am very careful with it as I don’t want to grieve the Holy Spirit. I have been His since I was 7 years old, and am now 74! He is my love, first and foremost and always! A friend needs money and when I prayed about giving her some, a still small voice clearly said, “Don’t be deceived.” I was surprised, but His voice was so real. I was kneeling at His throne of grace at the time. Hope you can advise me. Blessings!

Hi, I grew up Lutheran as a kid, but didn’t always enjoy the traditional service. So I started going to a Pentecostal church, since they had a better idea of how to worship.
But I told Pastor, I love and support you as the pastor. And I love my church family. But:
1: I’m not gonna support a Non Trinitarian view, since God is 3 in 1, thou with the Godhead having distinctions different from the other two.
2: There doesn’t need to be evidence of tongue speaking on display if indwelt by Holy Spirit, especially if that person doesn’t have that particular gift. Not saying that they can’t/won’t get it cuz God has no limits.
3: I don’t believe all sins are equal in the eyes of God, with several references mentioned throughout scripture.

Concerning the gifts of the Spirit: Is the “speaking in tongues” just for the early church, or is it still relevant today? I am confused. I really need some guidance in this area. Thank you.

I’m not sure if this is the right website to ask this, but I am looking for info or books or even a reliable website on he gifts of the spirit. The Lord has blessed me with an abundance of spiritual gifts IE prophesy, word of knowledge, word of wisdom, discerning of spirits, and tongues and interpretation of tongues, the latter my focus is not so much on due to the misuse and abuse of. But if you guys have any info on these I would greatly appreciate it, thank you and God bless.

Ray, here are some short Q&As on spiritual gifts if that’s helpful: http://impactnews.info/answers/?s=spiritual+gifts

  7. Bakundukize Dieudonné says:

I love how you have answered this question because there are many Pastors, televangelists who affirm that spiritual gifts are not relevant today as we have the whole Bible. So, what I can add is that every spiritual gift must be tested against the Bible. Every gift must be in perfect harmony with the Scripture. God bless BGEA.
